TIMELESS LAND

DV | 36 min | 2009 | the film has a 1-screen version and an installation version

Timeless Land is a visual poem inspired by Kevin Walsh's life and music. A microfilm in its essence, home made and intimate. Timeless Land reflects my grief process. My camera is subjective, I look for directions, I experiment through his absence. I know time is not linear, it flows in many directions...

This film is an impressionistic mix of our lives, the projects we started (as Time travellers), places, images, sounds. I then did a dub remix of the film, projecting it onto the walls and objects of our living room and re-shot/edit most of the film using these spectral images, like echos, creating a layered and textured imagery where different times superimpose in space. An hypnotic journey through visions of the past and memories of the future.

The film has a One-screen version + an installation version where the film is divided in 3 parts which should take place in 3 different small spaces/rooms arranged in a comfortable way. It is a very intimate film and I feel the way people watch it should have also that kind of intimacy.

director's notes

I started to make this film just after Kevin's death, a way, I suppose, to transform the pain into beauty. Kevin was a musician, I am a filmmaker. Sound and image completing each other. Together we signed as ‘The Time travellers’. Kevin was not only a brilliant musician and a Dj, but also a traveler, a poet, a punk rocker, a Prince from the Moon, a generous and passionate man. His understanding of life was not conventional, it was unique. Anyway the film is not a chronological biography of Kevin but a journey through our spirit, his music, his writing, my images, the moon and the stars. He wrote the ‘script’ for his funeral, it was his last performance; he selected the songs to play and asked me to film it. We must act while the occasion exists, he told me.

Having only a few tapes with video footage of Kevin, this film was made with what I have: music, photos, letters, notes, memories... In our home I made a studio and between filming and editing, I started to create new scenes as a natural and organic process, filming in London and then in Jamaica (see One Love).

The images are guided and inspired by Kevin’s music when he was a ‘Full moon scientist’ (his band with Steve Rowlands), music that expresses Kevin’s cosmology and wonders through Time and Imagination. The waves of sound from trips around the Moon (in particular from the unreleased album ‘Moon Ark’), with its soft beats and strong sub-bass lines, creates a deep hypnotic atmosphere. The film is an evocative journey, an hypnotic collage exploring the nature of existence. The idea is to create an Alice-like rabbit hole, an emotional mosaic of places, encounters and dream states.

synopsis

TIMELESS LAND is a experimental film, a work of love, which I started after Kevin, my partner, passed away last December. It is a journey through a non-linear time, almost collage of ideas, memories and projects...
